Project Overview

Galmudug Times is Somalia's trusted independent news network, headquartered in Galkayo and serving audiences across Galmudug State, Somalia as a whole, and the global Somali diaspora.

We designed and built a full-featured Somali-language news platform from the ground up — complete with real-time weather, multi-category news browsing, newsletter subscriptions, and a custom article management system. The platform went live in 2026 and is now actively publishing breaking news, feature stories, sports, international coverage, and creative writing.

The Challenge

A Media Landscape Defined by Misinformation

Somalia's media environment is often characterised by misinformation and bias. Galmudug Times needed a platform that could stand apart — built on accuracy, independence, and public interest journalism from day one.

Establishing Full Editorial Independence

The client required a platform whose editorial decisions are made completely free from political or commercial pressure — an independent voice that holds power accountable on behalf of the public it serves.

Connecting a Scattered Global Diaspora

Somali communities worldwide had no reliable digital source for news from Galmudug. The platform had to simultaneously serve local readers in the region and diaspora readers spread across continents.

Meeting International Journalism Standards

The team follows the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) code of ethics. The platform had to support a structured editorial review workflow, a transparent corrections policy, and multi-category publishing from the start.

Modern Somali-Language News Platform

We built a clean, professional news site fully in Somali, structured around 5 distinct categories — Soomaaliya (Somalia), Caalamka (International), Ciyaaraha (Sports), Sheeko Faneed (Creative Writing), and Taarikh (History) — so readers can instantly find the news that matters to them.

Live Weather & Real-Time Context

The site displays live weather conditions in Galkayo alongside the current date and time, giving readers an immediate sense of place and grounding the platform in the local community it serves.

Newsletter Subscription System

A clean email newsletter system — labelled "Wargeysga" — lets readers subscribe to receive the latest breaking stories directly in their inbox, keeping the diaspora connected wherever they are in the world.

Express REST API & SEO-Friendly URL Slugs

We built the article management backend using Node.js with Express (v4.18) and a SQLite database via the sqlite3 package, enabling editors to publish content quickly while generating clean, shareable slug-based URLs optimised for social media spread.

Full Social Media Integration

Galmudug Times launched with active Facebook, TikTok, and X/Twitter channels integrated directly into the site — driving audience growth across every platform the Somali community uses most.
